BOOKS ON TRANSLATION

General Bilingual (French/English) Dictionaries

  1. The Robert and Collins
This is the standard one volume edition of the dictionary

  2. The Robert and Collins Super Senior French-English, English-French Dictionary, 2 volumes, 2712 pages
As far as dictionaries are concerned, the general rule is, the bigger the better. This 2-volume edition is better because it includes many more examples than the smaller version and it has many more entries also. If you can afford it, there is no reason why you should not opt for this.

  3. Harraps French-English, English-French Dictionary, 4 volumes
This is a very exhaustive dictionary that comes in four volumes, two volumes are for English-French translation while the other two are for French-English translation. Harraps is very rich with technical terms.

  4. Harraps French-English, English-French Dictionary
This is the standard Harraps dictionary. This is ideal if you need a dictionary for general terminology and if you only translate occasionally.

Bilingual Dictionaries of Idiomatic Expressions

  1. 2000 Expressions Françaises Pratiques et Utiles by Camille-H. Mailhot
A dictionary of expressions that comes with exercises to illustrate the usage of each expression. This is an indispensable tool for any translator.
